Behind the Stitches: The New Zealand Story of Native World

When you hold a Native World garment in your hands - soft, featherlight, and rich in natural warmth - you’re holding a story.

A story that begins in the wild landscapes of New Zealand, where pristine mountains meet ancient forests. A story shaped by deep care for nature, thoughtful design, and decades of craftsmanship. This is the story behind Native World, and the reason we’re proud to bring their pieces to the UK.

Where Nature and Knitwear Meet

Native World is the signature brand of Manawatu Knitting Mills (MKM), based in Palmerston North on New Zealand’s North Island. A family-owned business with over 135 years of experience, MKM has grown from humble beginnings into one of the most respected knitwear manufacturers in the Southern Hemisphere.

But at the heart of their success is a fibre unlike any other:
Possum Merino a rare and luxurious blend that reflects New Zealand’s unique relationship with nature.

The Fibre with a Purpose

The use of brushtail possum fibre in clothing began as a conservation solution. Introduced from Australia, possums have no natural predators in New Zealand. Their unchecked population poses a major threat to native birds and forest ecosystems.

By using possum fur in knitwear, Native World is part of an eco-conscious effort to reduce environmental harm. When blended with New Zealand merino wool and a touch of silk (in their Luxury Blend), the result is a yarn that’s:

  • Exceptionally warm yet feather-light
  • Naturally breathable
  • Soft, strong, and long-wearing

Crafted with Innovation

From sourcing to stitching, every Native World garment is made with care in New Zealand. Their factory is fitted with state-of-the-art machinery, but the soul of each piece lies in their attention to detail:

  • Garments are fully knitted and linked for shape retention and durability
  • Each one is finished with a Manuka Hydrosol rinse, a skin-friendly, antibacterial
  • Colour palettes are carefully selected to reflect New Zealand’s landscapes — from Misty greys and Pistachio greens, to the rich Scarlet of pōhutukawa trees in bloom

This balance of heritage, technology and sustainability is what makes Native World so special.

Designed for Real Life

While the fibres may come from the wilderness, the garments are made for real life. Native World knitwear is:

  • Easy to layer, wear and care for
  • Durable enough for travel, work or everyday use
  • Timeless in style, yet quietly luxurious

From lightweight wraps to casual hooded knits, each piece is designed to last through many seasons of wear.

Bringing Native World to the UK

At Hello Possums, we’re proud to be a UK stockist of Native World. We fell in love with their garments for their warmth and softness ... but stayed for their values:

  • Conscious production
  • Eco-aware materials
  • Kindness to skin, people and planet

We believe that what we wear should reflect what we care about. And with Native World, every stitch does exactly that.
