Possum Fur: A Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Choice

We proudly offer a luxurious, eco-conscious alternative to traditional fur: ethically sourced possum fur. In a world where sustainability and environmental responsibility matter more than ever, possum fur stands out as a product that not only offers exceptional quality but also plays a crucial role in conserving New Zealand’s delicate ecosystems.

Why Possum Fur is a Sustainable Choice

The brushtail possum, originally introduced to New Zealand in the 19th century, has become a major threat to the country’s native flora and fauna. With no natural predators, possums have multiplied to an overwhelming population of about 30 million, consuming an estimated 21,000 tonnes of vegetation each night. This destruction jeopardises native plants, birds, and wildlife, including the endangered kiwi.

Possums are not farmed for their fur. Instead, the fur used in garments is a by-product of necessary population control efforts where controlling the possum population is essential for protecting the country's biodiversity. By choosing possum fur products, you’re not only selecting a natural, biodegradable material, but also contributing to the preservation of New Zealand's native environment.

 A By-Product of Conservation Efforts

These efforts, supported by The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) aim to protect the country’s fragile ecosystems from the damage caused by possums. This makes possum fur one of the most eco-friendly and ethically sourced natural materials available today.

The commercial use of possum fur is actively encouraged by environmentalists because it supports ongoing conservation efforts. By purchasing possum fur garments, you’re directly helping to fund these initiatives, which play an important role in protecting New Zealand’s forests, wildlife, and unique natural beauty.

 Eco-Friendly Credentials

Possum fur is not only a renewable resource, but it’s also fully biodegradable, unlike synthetic furs that rely on petroleum-based products. Faux furs, for example, often use up to 10 barrels of oil per coat and can take centuries to break down in landfills. In contrast, possum fur decomposes naturally, making it a low-impact material.

In addition to its sustainability, possum fur is known for its incredible softness, lightweight warmth, and durability. It is often blended with Merino wool and mulberry silk to create luxury garments that are not only beautiful but also long-lasting, reducing the need for fast fashion.

Ethical Sourcing

At Hello Possums, all of our possum fur is sourced from certified, reputable trappers who comply with the New Zealand Animal Welfare Act and the New Zealand Fur Council’s Best Practice Guidelines. The fur is harvested from wild populations as part of legally sanctioned efforts to control the possum population and restore balance to the ecosystem.

 Protecting New Zealand's Ecosystem

Possum fur harvesting is part of a broader conservation strategy aimed at protecting New Zealand’s native species. By removing possums from forests, conservationists are able to safeguard native plants and birds that have been devastated by these introduced pests.

Possums are a direct threat to native bird species, as they compete for food and shelter and even prey on bird eggs and fledglings. By purchasing possum fur, you are supporting the restoration of natural habitats and helping native species like the kiwi bird thrive once more.

Sustainable. Ethical. Beautiful. That’s the Hello Possums way. By choosing possum fur, you’re not only selecting a high-quality, luxurious garment, but you’re also making a positive contribution to New Zealand’s environmental future.

Toasty!

Great gloves to manage my Reynauds. I pretty much have to wear something in my hands all day, all winter long living in Vermont. I ordered the wrong kind of glove at first and they responded beautifully to my concern and sent me a new pair lickety split. I love the poppy color too!

Amazing

Love the wrist warmers. I chose the blossom colour, very pretty. I suffer severe joint pains in my thumbs due to Long Covid and have been wearing these 24hrs a day and it’s reduced the pain
